Anyone can take this test to understand and monitor their cardiovascular health.
You should also consider taking this test if:
- You have a strong family history of heart disease
- You have a first-degree relative who has suffered a heart attack, cardiac stents, a stroke or has undergone bypass surgery
- You are overweight or obese
- You drink alcohol and smoke frequently
- You lead a sedentary lifestyle
- You suffer from diabetes, kidney disease, polycystic ovary syndrome or an underactive thyroid gland
The sample must be collected fasted, before 10am on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday and returned on the same day.
Fasting means that you take the sample in the morning before you have breakfast. You can still drink water when fasting. Always follow the advice of your physician with regards to fasting, particularly if you have any medical conditions.

Cholesterol is a waxy lipid produced in the liver and found in every cell of the body. There are two main types of cholesterol, one is in the form of HDL (high-density cholesterol) and LDL (low-density cholesterol).

HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein)
HDL is known as “good cholesterol”. HDL transports excess bad cholesterol to your liver to be expelled from the body.

LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein)
LDL is known as “bad cholesterol”. LDL transports cholesterol to various parts of your body. It may build up in the arteries causing them to become hard and narrow.

HDL % of Total Cholesterol
The HDL % of total cholesterol refers to the amount of "good cholesterol" in the body which can combat low-density lipoproteins or "bad cholesterol". The higher you HDL % of total cholesterol, the better.

Lipoprotein (a)
Lipoproteins are made of protein and fat that carry cholesterol through your bloodstream. Lipoprotein (a) is a type of (low-density lipoprotein) LDL. Research has shown that elevated levels of this protein puts you at greater risk for heart disease, heart attack and stroke. Genetics play a significant role in determining an individuals lipoprotein (a) levels.

Anyone can take this cholesterol test to understand and monitor their cardiovascular health. You should take this test if your mother, father, brother or sister has ever had a heart attack, undergone bypass surgery, had cardiac stents or a stroke in the past.
For this test, a capillary (finger prick) blood sample is required.
Activating the test connects you to the unique alphanumeric barcode within your LetsGetChecked sample collection kit. The laboratory cannot process your sample if the test is not activated and linked to you. You should only activate your test when you are ready to take your sample.

Please ensure that the sample is collected before 9am in a fasted state and returned immediately using the carrier method provided within the sample collection kit. Each of our health tests includes a prepaid shipping envelope to return your samples to the laboratory.
Please do not collect or return samples on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
