Who should be tested
If you want to learn more about your menstrual cycle and ovulation, then LetsGetChecked's progesterone testing can provide you with key insights.
Ovulation is the process in which an egg is released from an ovary and typically happens on a monthly basis. Many things can impact ovulation, including age as well as certain medical conditions. If ovulation is irregular, it can impact your ability to get pregnant. This testing from LetsGetChecked measures the amount of progesterone in your blood on day 21 of your menstrual cycle.
You should consider taking this test if:
You would like insights to help confirm that you are ovulating You are interested in learning more about fertility insights related to your hormones You would like to understand your levels so that you can work with your provider on options available to you Sometimes progesterone is measured during pregnancy. If you are pregnant, we don't recommend you take this form of testing. Please consult with your healthcare provider for next steps.
When to collect your sample
This Progesterone-Ovulation sample must be collected 7 days before an expected period. This will depend on your cycle. If you have a 28 day period, you should collect your sample on day 21 to confirm that ovulation has occurred. The sample must be collected in the morning, on Monday - Friday, and returned on the same day. It may be necessary to wait until day 21 of your cycle falls on one of these days. Results may be affected if you have an irregular menstrual cycle or if you have been taking hormonal contraceptives within the last three months. It is important that you are not using hormonal contraception when collecting your sample as the results may not be accurate. This testing may not be suitable if you have an irregular menstrual cycle or if you have been taking hormonal contraceptives within the last three months.
What's measured
Progesterone
Progesterone makes the lining of your uterus grow thicker so that a fertilized egg can attach (implant) to the uterus.
Progesterone levels usually start to rise when an egg is released from the ovary (ovulation). Levels continue to rise for several days and for those with a 28-day cycle, will normally peak on day 21 of the cycle (with day 1 being the first day of menstruation).
If progesterone concentrations do not rise and fall on a monthly basis, it can be an indication that someone is not ovulating.
