Vitamin B12 is one of the eight B vitamins. It is a water-soluble vitamin. Vitamin B12 is responsible for neurological function, producing DNA, maintaining a healthy nervous system and generating red blood cells which carry oxygen around the body. It is an essential nutrient in pregnancy.

You should monitor your vitamin B12 levels to rule out underlying health conditions or explain symptoms such as exhaustion, brain fog or digestive issues.

You should take the test if:

  • You are suffering from chronic fatigue
  • You are following a plant-based diet
  • You are planning on becoming pregnant
  • You are over the age of 50
  • You suffer from Crohn's infection
  • You suffer from Coeliac infection
  • You are deficient in the intrinsic factor, a glycoprotein which plays an important role in absorbing vitamin B12

The sample must be collected fasted, before 10am on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday and returned on the same day.

Fasting means that you sample the test in the morning before you have breakfast. You can still drink water when fasting. Always follow the advice of your doctor with regards to fasting, particularly if you have any medical conditions.
