About this test
About this test
Who should take this test
The Female Hormone Test is for anyone who is curious about their fertility status. If you are starting a family, or are thinking about pregnancy down the line, the female hormone test is for you.
This test is not suitable if you have been taking hormonal contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy within the last three months, as the accuracy of results will be affected.
Hormonal imbalances may be caused by:
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
Primary ovarian insufficiency
Early menopause or menopause
Thyroid issues
Stress
Obesity or overweight
When to test
You must collect your sample on days 3 to 7 of your menstrual cycle - this means 3 to 7 days after you start to bleed. This is because hormone levels vary throughout the menstrual cycle and the reference ranges used by the laboratory are specific to the first week of the cycle.
If your periods are absent or irregular, you will need to share these results with your healthcare provider for interpretation.
The sample must be collected in the morning, on a Monday to Friday, and returned on the same day.
This test is not suitable if you have been taking hormonal contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy within the last three months, as the accuracy of results will be affected.
Supplements with Biotin (B7) can impact your results. Wait at least 8 hours after your last dose before collecting your sample.
The use of steroid-containing medications, including steroid creams, may impact your test results. The accuracy of your results may be affected if you have used anabolic steroids or other steroid-containing medication within the last 3-6 months, or if you have used steroid creams within the last week.
This test is not suitable for anyone under the age of 18.
What's tested
Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
Follicle Stimulating Hormone is responsible for stimulating the growth of egg-bearing follicles in your ovaries.
Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
Luteinizing Hormone is responsible for ovulation. It works in conjunction with follicle stimulating hormone to trigger the release of the egg.
Prolactin
Prolactin is a hormone made in your pituitary gland and plays many important roles in the body, including in breast tissue development and breast milk production.
Estradiol
Estradiol is the main form of estrogen and has many important functions, especially in the menstrual cycle. It contributes to the maturation and release of eggs and thickens the lining of the uterus in preparation for implantation.
