C-reactive protein (CRP), which is synthesized by the liver, is one of the most sensitive acute-phase markers of inflammation. Elevated CRP often occurs before clinical symptoms, including fever.
CRP elevations are nonspecific, but may indicate the presence of an underlying inflammatory disease. Blood CRP is a marker used to detect inflammation in the body. This may indicate the presence of other conditions or infections and can identify deterioration or damage that you may not be aware of.
A CRP test result can be elevated for many reasons so it is important to talk to your doctor if you are concerned*.
You should take the test if:
- You are at risk for chronic inflammatory diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus or vasculitis
- You are at risk for Crohn's disease
- You are at risk for bowel disorders
- You are overweight
The sample must be collected before 10am on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday and returned on the same day.
*CRP levels may be affected by current infections, recent surgery, inflammatory conditions and medications which suppress the immune system.
C-reactive Protein (CRP)
C-reactive Protein (CRP) is a plasma protein. It is known as an acute phase protein as its concentration rises when there is inflammation in the body. CRP is produced by the liver, concentrations vary in response to tissue damage or inflammation in the body.
