Finger prickProstate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men worldwide. Prostate cancer will often present no symptoms in the early stages. If you have any concerns about prostate cancer, you should talk to your doctor.
Should symptoms occur, they may include:
- An increased need to urinate, especially at night
- A sudden need to urinate
- Feeling like the bladder has not emptied fully
- Difficulty starting or stopping a stream of urine
- Visible blood in semen and/or urine
- Fatigue
- Unexplained weight loss
- Pain in the pelvis, thighs, and back
- Erectile dysfunction
The PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) Test is a screening tool which can help detect signs of prostate cancer in the blood. A raised PSA level can occur due to non-cancerous enlargement or inflammation of the prostate. These conditions also require further investigation.
You can take the test if:
- You are over the age of 50
- You have a strong family history of prostate cancer
- You are overweight or obese
It is recommended to collect this sample before 10am on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday and return it on the same day.
Ejaculation, vigorous exercise and activities such as horse riding and cycling can affect PSA levels. You should avoid these activities for at least 48 hours before taking this test. PSA levels can be impacted by many factors including the use of some medications. It is important to be aware that this test may not identify if you have prostate cancer. Talk to your doctor if you have any symptoms.
Please note that this test will not identify PSA levels under <0.03ug/l and may not be suitable if you have had a prostatectomy (your prostate removed).

Calculated Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) Ratio refers to total PSA versus free PSA levels. If you have a high PSA level and a low level of free PSA, it may be more likely that you have prostate cancer.

Please ensure that the sample is collected before 9am and returned immediately using the carrier method provided within the sample collection kit. Each of our health tests includes a prepaid delivery envelope to return your samples to the laboratory.
Please do not collect or return samples on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
