Results from LetsGetChecked Cholesterol and Lipoprotein(a) testing

What is Lipoprotein(a)?

Lipoprotein(a) or Lp(a) is a type of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) made in the liver that carries cholesterol to the cells in your arteries. Unlike other LDLs which can be controlled by diet and lifestyle, Lp(a) levels are mainly determined by your genetic makeup and are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Why is it important to test your Lp(a) levels?

  • ~20% of the world's population has elevated Lp(a) levels.

  • Many people with high Lp(a) levels don’t have symptoms.

  • If you have high Lp(a) levels, your risk for heart attack & strokes can increase.

  • Your Lp(a) levels are up to 90% determined by your genetic makeup, so testing is important if you have a family history of heart disease.
