Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis are three of the most common STIs. They are often symptomless and early detection is crucial to avoid long-term consequences such as pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, chronic pelvic pain, infertility in women and epididymitis, which causes infertility in men by inflaming the reproductive tubes.
80% of sexually transmitted infections are asymptomatic (do not display any symptoms), however, if symptoms do occur, they are likely to present themselves within two weeks of infection.
Symptoms of sexually transmitted infections may include:
- Painful urination
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- Rash on the genitals and/or anus
- Itching or irritation on the genitals and/or anus
- Unusual lumps or bumps around the genitals and/or anus
- Change in color of the male or female discharge
- Abnormal discharge in terms of smell, consistency or volume
- Strong vaginal odor
- Painful erections
STIs can take a period of time to become detectable. You should wait at least 2 weeks from the time of potential exposure to infection before taking this test.
You should also consider getting tested if:
- you become sexually active
- you have had unprotected sex
- you are experiencing symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection
- you are entering into a new sexual relationship
- you have received a notification from a previous partner that they are infected (STIs can remain dormant for years and/ or take up to three weeks to become detectable.)
The test must be taken fasted, before 9 a.m and returned on the same day.
Chlamydia is an infection caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. Chlamydia can be contracted through sexual contact and generally shows no symptoms.
Gonorrhoea is a bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It is transmitted through sexual contact and most commonly causes a yellowish discharge in men and is asymptomatic in women.
Trichomoniasis is caused by infection with the protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis and is transmitted through sexual contact. Trichomoniasis is often responsible for a green or frothy discharge in men and women.
