Human papillomavirus (HPV) is transmitted through sexual contact and causes almost 100% of cervical cancer in women. It is estimated that 1 in 2 will contract the virus in their lifetime. Like most STDs, HPV is symptomless and requires a test to detect the virus.
The HPV test detects strains which are considered high-risk for developing cervical cancer.
You should take the test if:
- you are over the age of 21
- you have had skin to skin contact with someone who is carrying the HPV virus
- you have had unprotected sex
- your mother carried the HPV virus during your birth
- you have not received a HPV vaccine
HPV samples take 5 - 7 days to process in the laboratory. It should take 10 days to complete the process in total.
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a family of over 100 viral strains, some of which cause warts, others which are associated with tumors on the genital tract, most frequently, on the cervix.
