Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a family of over 100 viral strains, some of which cause warts, others which are associated with tumors on the genital tract, most frequently, on the cervix.
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is almost as common as the cold virus, while some strains cause warts, others cause 99% of all cervical cancers.
HPV Infection doesn't generally present any signs or symptoms bar visible warts, that may appear at points of sexual contact. Warts can be small, large, flat or raised, with serrated edges, taking on the appearance of a cauliflower. Each strain of HPV causes a different wart. Cancers caused by HPV infection generally do not present with symptoms until they are developed and more difficult to treat which is why is it so important to get screened on a regular basis.
The HPV test detects stains which are considered high-risk HPV strains that are associated with developing cervical cancer.
