Gardnerella vaginalis is a bacterium that inhabits the vaginal area as a normal occurrence. It is only when it becomes the predominant bacteria in the vagina that it causes problems for women. The vagina is designed to be self-cleaning and should be acidic (pH < 4.5). If women have an overgrowth of gardnerella they develop an infection called Bacterial Vaginosis.
