Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the spirochete bacterium Treponema pallidum. Although less common than other STIs, an increase in syphilis has been noted in recent years. The stage between infection with syphilis and the start of the first symptoms can range from 10 to 90 days (average 21 days).
