About STDs
About STDs
Infections
Chlamydia and gonorrhea are the two most common sexually transmitted infections. They can spread through vaginal, anal, and oral sex, causing infections of the genitals, rectum, and throat. This test is designed to detect genital infections (affecting the penis or vagina)*.
Chlamydia
Chlamydia is a bacterial infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. It can affect anyone who is sexually active. Chlamydia typically does not cause symptoms. Routine screening and early detection are essential as untreated chlamydia can spread easily to partners and have long-term health consequences.
Gonorrhea
Gonorrhea is a bacterial infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It can affect anyone who is sexually active. Gonorrhea typically does not cause symptoms. Routine screening and early detection are essential as untreated gonorrhea can spread easily to partners and have long-term health consequences.
*If you are concerned about rectal or throat infections please talk to your healthcare provider about testing.
Symptoms
Most people with chlamydia and gonorrhea do not experience any symptoms. If symptoms do develop, they are likely to occur within two weeks of exposure to the infection.
Symptoms of genital chlamydia and gonorrhea may include:
Painful urination
New or unusual discharge from the penis or vagina
Vaginal bleeding after sex or between periods
Pain during sex
Pain or swelling in the testicles (typically only on one side)
If you have rectal or throat symptoms or if you are concerned about infections in those areas, talk to your healthcare provider about testing.
In persons with female anatomy, symptoms such as pelvic pain, pain during sex, and unusual vaginal discharge or bad odor can be indicative of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and may warrant in-person evaluation with a healthcare provider. PID is a complication of chlamydia and gonorrhea and early identification and treatment are crucial to reduce long-term effects. If you’re concerned about these symptoms, please talk to your healthcare provider before taking this test.
In persons with male anatomy, symptoms such as pain in the pelvis, lower abdomen, or testicles may be a sign of epididymitis (inflammation of the tube that carries and stores sperm). Don’t delay speaking with your healthcare provider if you are experiencing these symptoms
Who should get tested
Routine testing is a normal part of being sexually active. Anyone who is sexually active can get chlamydia and gonorrhea but these infections often have no symptoms. Yearly screening is a great addition to your health calendar.
Testing outside of your normal schedule is particularly important if:
You start a new sexual relationship
You have multiple sexual partners
You are in a non-monogamous relationship
You have unprotected sex
You are experiencing symptoms of an infection
Chlamydia and gonorrhea can cause infections of the genital area (vagina and penis), rectum, and/or throat so the test you need depends on your sexual activity — the Simple 2 Test offered by LetsGetChecked detects chlamydia and gonorrhea in genital areas only.
If you are concerned about possible exposure to an STD you should avoid sexual activity until you receive a test result.
Sample collection
The Simple 2 Test involves collecting a penile urine sample or vaginal swab sample to send to our partner laboratories to test for genital chlamydia and gonorrhea.
Collect your Simple 2 sample:
Monday-Friday
And return on the same day.
Don’t forget
It takes 2 weeks from the time of exposure for chlamydia and gonorrhea to become detectable in a sample. This is called the window period. If you test before the window period has ended you may receive a negative result even when you have the infection.
Read all the instructions and warnings before you collect your sample.
Vaginal swab sample
If you have a vagina and engage in vaginal sex, you should collect a vaginal swab sample to test for chlamydia and gonorrhea. Vaginal swabs are more sensitive than urine samples for detecting vaginal chlamydia and gonorrhea.
Click here to see how vaginal swab sample collection works
Penile urine sample
If you have a penis, you should collect a urine sample to test for chlamydia and gonorrhea. The urine sample you collect must be the first part of your urine stream; do not urinate for at least one hour before collecting your sample.

If you have anxiety about going to the doctor and requesting a STD screening, this is a really good alternative... Also, I was able to use my HSA to pay! Overall great experience!
Very efficient. Would definitely recommend it for anyone looking for reassurance.
The service this company provides, in my opinion, is better than some doctors I have been to. No exaggeration.
Easy to use, and quick to ring me with results and a chat about my concerns. Would recommend to anyone!
There were no special clinics near me that dealt in checking for STDs/HIV. Without this accessible and affordable method, it would have been a lot harder for me to get checked.
So so easy! Wish I'd done it sooner just for peace of mind! Was cheaper than going to the doctor for a test and better still you don't have to have a conversation about your sex life!
I felt pretty selfish for having never been tested solely because I was scared. The speedy delivery + return + processing didn't keep me on the edge of my seat for longer than a week.
I'm STD-free, and it’s the best feeling to be able to know that.
Discreet, simple, and saves so much time and trouble. Not to mention no moderately embarrassing conversations with your doc, if you're someone who is as shy as I am about sexual history conversations!
Everything was good and a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. Thank you, LetsGetChecked, for this wonderful service. My anxiety about getting tested and the “what if” fear that I had is gone.
This was a very discreet and straight forward way to get a test done and to get quick, professional results. They couldn't have been more helpful.
Discreet packaging for tests that could be embarrassing. Once my results were back I got an email and text 10/10 would take another test.

The Simple 2 Home Sample Collection Kit is for anyone who is over the age of 18 who is sexually active and wants to test for chlamydia and gonorrhea. Chlamydia and gonorrhea are the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infections. Many people with these infections have no symptoms so testing is very important.
The Simple 2 Urine Home Sample Collection Kit (Penile) should be used by persons with a penis. The Simple 2 Swab Home Sample Collection Kit (Vaginal) should be used by persons with a vagina.
This test cannot diagnose chlamydia or gonorrhea outside of the genital area, for example chlamydia or gonorrhea in the throat or rectum. If you have anal or oral sex and are concerned about infections in these areas, talk to your local healthcare provider about testing.
If you have had sexual contact with someone with a diagnosis or symptoms of gonorrhea or chlamydia, please visit a healthcare provider for treatment and evaluation as soon as possible,Expedited Partner Therapy (www.cdc.gov/std/ept/default.htm)
If you test positive for chlamydia, you will need to make an appointment with a healthcare provider or sexual health clinic for treatment as soon as possible. Alternatively, you may arrange a telehealth consultation with an appropriately licenced member of our healthcare team.
If you test positive for gonorrhea, you will need to make an appointment with a healthcare provider or sexual health clinic for treatment as soon as possible.
The sample collection kit we will send you will be either for a vaginal swab or a penile urine sample. This test can detect chlamydia and gonorrhea in the genital area.
If you have a vagina and engage in vaginal sex, you should collect a vaginal swab sample. Vaginal swabs are more sensitive than urine samples for detecting vaginal chlamydia and gonorrhea. This means that vaginal swabs are more likely than urine samples to accurately detect a vaginal gonorrhea or chlamydia infection.
If you have a penis, you should collect a urine sample to test for chlamydia and gonorrhea.
If you have anal or oral sex and are concerned about infections in these areas, contact your local healthcare provider about testing.
LetsGetChecked offers treatment for individuals who test positive for chlamydia. We do not offer treatment for individuals who test positive for gonorrhea. Due to State regulations, we cannot provide medication in every State. Please click here for the list of States where we cannot offer treatment.
Activating the test connects you to the unique alphanumeric barcode within your LetsGetChecked sample collection kit. The laboratory cannot process your sample if the test is not activated and linked to you.
LetsGetChecked works with a team of board-certified healthcare professionals. Our clinical team is on standby throughout the testing process and, if you receive a positive test result, you will receive a call to discuss your results. If your test result is negative, but you have indicated you are experiencing symptoms of an infection, you will receive a call from our clinical team to discuss your symptoms. If you have any questions before, during, or after collecting your sample or receiving test results, you can schedule a call with our clinical team for help and advice.
The sample must be collected on a Monday-Friday, and returned on the same day. Please do not collect or return samples on a Saturday or Sunday. The sample should be collected in the morning to ensure it can be picked up by or dropped off at a UPS facility for shipment on the same day as collection.
It can take up to 2 weeks after sexual contact for gonorrhea or chlamydia to show up in a test. Testing earlier than 2 weeks after exposure to gonorrhea or chlamydia can increase the risk of incorrect test results.
If you are collecting a urine sample do not urinate for at least 1 hour before collecting your sample. Failure to wait at least 1 hour to collect your sample after you last urinated may lead to incorrect test results.
