Did you know that the majority of cardiovascular diseases are preventable? In fact, 80% of premature heart attacks and strokes can be prevented by practicing healthy behaviors.
Regular testing provides you with the valuable insights you need to track your cholesterol over time, as well as help you monitor the impact of healthy lifestyle habits to help prevent disease. Every adult, no matter what weight, fitness or lifestyle, should stay aware of their levels throughout their life. However, there are some factors which may increase your risk, so you should discuss any results with your healthcare provider.
Triglycerides
Triglycerides are one of the most common fats found in the body. When you regularly consume more calories than you burn, your body converts these excess calories into triglycerides and they are stored in your body as fat. High level of triglycerides can lead to cardiovascular disease, causing heart attack and stroke.
Total Cholesterol
Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in all cells in your body. Your body needs small amounts of cholesterol for many reasons; from helping to make vitamin D to digesting fats. However, high levels can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease. The balance of “good” and “bad” cholesterol is important.
HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein)
Typically referred to as "good cholesterol", high-density lipoprotein (HDL) helps to remove "bad cholesterol" from your bloodstream and send it back to the liver to be removed from your body. Higher levels of "good cholesterol" lower your risk of cardiovascular disease which means that your risk of stroke and heart attack are lowered.
LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein)
Known as "bad cholesterol", low-density lipoprotein (LDL) usually makes up most of the cholesterol in your body. When your body has too much LDL cholesterol, it can build up in the walls of your blood vessels and increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.
HDL % of Total Cholesterol
The HDL % of total cholesterol refers to the amount of "good cholesterol" in the body, compared to the total amount of cholesterol. The higher this percentage of good cholesterol, the better.
Your sample must be collected while fasting*, on a Monday-Friday, and returned on the same day.
*Fasting means that you collect the sample in the morning before you have breakfast. You can still drink water when fasting. Always follow the advice of your physician with regards to fasting, particularly if you have an underlying medical condition.
Every adult can and should test their cholesterol to understand and monitor their heart health.
