About this test

About this test

Hemoglobin A1c

Hba1c, or A1c, measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 3 months. This test is used to screen for prediabetes and diabetes. If you have diabetes, monitoring your HbA1c levels can help you to understand how well your blood sugars are being controlled.

Triglycerides

Triglycerides are one of the most common fats found in the body. When you regularly consume more calories than you burn, your body converts these excess calories into triglycerides and they are stored in your body as fat. High levels of triglycerides can lead to cardiovascular disease, causing heart attack and stroke.

Total Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in all cells in your body. Your body needs small amounts of cholesterol for many reasons; from helping to make vitamin D to digesting fats. However, high levels can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease. The balance of “good” and “bad” cholesterol is important.

LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein)

Known as "bad cholesterol", low-density lipoprotein (LDL) usually makes up most of the cholesterol in your body. When your body has too much LDL cholesterol, it can build up in the walls of your blood vessels and increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.

HDL % of Total Cholesterol

The HDL % of total cholesterol refers to the amount of "good cholesterol" in the body, compared to the total amount of cholesterol. The higher this percentage, the better.

HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein)

Typically referred to as "good cholesterol", high-density lipoprotein (HDL) helps to remove "bad cholesterol" from your bloodstream. Higher levels of “good cholesterol” lower your risk of cardiovascular disease.

The sample must be collected in the morning while fasting*, on Monday - Friday, and returned on the same day.

*Fasting means that you collect the sample in the morning before you have breakfast. You can still drink water when fasting. Always follow the advice of your physician with regards to fasting, particularly if you have an underlying medical condition.

You should consider testing if:

  • You have type 2 diabetes

  • You have prediabetes

  • You have a family history of high cholesterol

  • You eat a diet high in saturated fats

  • You lead a sedentary lifestyle

  • You smoke

  • You are overweight or obese

  • You are aged 35 or older, though younger people can be affected

  • You have a family history of diabetes

  • You are of African American, American Indian, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, or Pacific Islander heritage

This test is not suitable if:

  • You are under 18 years of age.

  • You are pregnant

Did you know that Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease are both preventable? In fact, 80% of premature heart attacks and strokes can be prevented with healthy behaviors.

Regular testing provides you with the valuable insights you need to track your cholesterol and blood sugar over time, as well as help you monitor the impact of healthy lifestyle habits to help prevent disease. Every adult, no matter what weight, fitness or lifestyle, should stay aware of their levels throughout their life. However, there are some factors which may increase your risk.

You should discuss any results with your healthcare provider.

High cholesterol has no symptoms, so many people don't know that their cholesterol is too high.

Did you know that you likely won’t display any symptoms if you have high cholesterol? The only way to know is to test.

Click on the 'When to test' section to learn more about factors that could increase your risk of high cholesterol.

There are two main types of diabetes, type 1 & type 2. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease usually developing in childhood. If you have type 1 diabetes, you should contact your healthcare provider (HCP) before taking this test.

Between 90-95% of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes, which tends to be diagnosed in adulthood. Type 2 diabetes often develops slowly over many years and can have very mild symptoms to begin with, which can go unnoticed. This is why keeping track of your blood sugar is so important, as type 2 diabetes can be prevented with healthy lifestyle changes.Common symptoms of diabetes can include:

  • Frequent urination (peeing), often at night

  • Excessive thirst

  • Excessive hunger

  • Blurred vision

  • Fatigue

  • Numbness or tingling in hands or feet

  • More infections than usual
