About Vaginitis

  • Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)

The cause of BV is unknown, but it is linked to an imbalance of good and bad bacteria in the vagina. BV will sometimes go away without treatment but if you have symptoms and a positive BV test result, treatment will be required.

  • Candida Vaginitis (CV)

Candida is a yeast that can cause an infection inside the vagina known as candida vaginitis or vaginal candidiasis. This is more commonly known as a yeast infection. In the United States, it is the second most common type of vaginal infection.

  • Trichomonas Vaginitis (TV)

TV or trichomoniasis is a very common STD among women. About 70% of people will not have symptoms and if left untreated, it can remain for months or even years. It is not possible to diagnose trichomoniasis based on symptoms alone, so testing is important.

We understand the symptoms of vaginitis can often cause discomfort, frustration, and even stress. However, vaginitis is so common that the majority of women will experience at least one episode in their lifetime. In fact, 88% of females experienced vaginal symptoms in the past year*. Symptoms can vary depending on the cause.

Symptoms of vaginitis can include:

  • A change in vaginal discharge.
  • Pain, itching, or burning in the vagina.
  • A strong fish-like odor, especially after sex.
  • Discomfort with urination.
  • Itching around the outside of the vagina.
  • Pain during sex.
  • Light vaginal bleeding or spotting.

Talk to your healthcare provider about any symptoms or concerns. For positive candida and BV test results, treatment will not be provided in the absence of vaginal symptoms.

Vaginitis is an inflammation or infection of the vaginal area. If you suspect you may have vaginitis, you're not alone. In fact, an estimated 1 in 3 American women will get BV in their lifetime. You should consider getting tested if you are a female over the age of 18 and have symptoms of vaginitis.

Your risk of vaginitis can increase if:

  • You have a new sex partner or multiple sex partners.
  • You use hormonal contraceptives (for example, birth control pills).
  • You have diabetes.
  • You are taking or have recently taken antibiotics.

The sample must be collected in the morning on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday and returned on the same day.

You should not collect your sample during your menstrual period or if you are pregnant. You must wait at least 48 hours after using vaginal creams, gels, tablets or engaging in sexual activity.

This test only detects candida vaginitis, trichomoniasis, and bacterial vaginosis. There is up to a 4 week window period from the time of exposure for trichomoniasis to become detectable. If you think you tested too early or you are concerned you may have been exposed to the disease, repeat testing may be required.

This test will not identify most sexually transmitted diseases. If you are concerned about possible exposure to a STD, we also offer a range of at-home tests that may be suitable.

Bacterial vaginosis and candida vaginitis are caused by an overgrowth of bacteria that cause symptoms. Without symptoms, the presence of the bacteria alone isn't necessarily harmful and the body usually restores balance on its own. Taking treatment without any symptoms can do more harm than good and can lead to treatment-resistant strains of bacteria.

This test is not for use during pregnancy. If you are pregnant, additional testing and treatment in the absence of symptoms may be required.

Treatment for trichomoniasis is available in certain US States to customers who test positive.

Treatment for candida vaginitis is available in certain US States if you test positive for certain species of candida and have symptoms of candida vaginitis. No treatment is available for the candida galbrata strain as this can be treatment resistant. If you test positive for candida glabrata our nurses can advise you on next steps to take.

Treatment for bacterial vaginosis is available in certain US States if you test positive for strains of bacteria that can cause bacterial vaginosis and have symptoms.

As your safety is our top priority, medication is at the discretion of our prescribing clinicians and will not be suitable for everyone. Some people with other conditions or risk factors may not be eligible to receive treatment through LetsGetChecked as in-person evaluation by a healthcare provider may be required.

Our nursing team will advise you of appropriate next steps to take if you are not eligible for treatment.

You should not collect your sample during your menstrual period or if you are pregnant.

Please wait at least 48 hours after using vaginal creams, gels, tablets or engaging in sexual activity.

Please do not collect or return samples on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

Return your sample using the carrier method provided within the sample collection kit. Each of our health tests includes a prepaid shipping envelope to return your samples to the laboratory.

If you are concerned about possible exposure to an STD you should refrain from sexual activity until you receive a test result. Note that the Vaginitis Test (BV CV TV) only tests for trichomoniasis and bacteria that cause bacterial vaginosis and candida vaginitis. If you are concerned you may have been exposed to other STDs then you will need to test for them separately. LetsGetChecked offer a full range of sexual health tests.

The CDC recommends retesting 2 weeks to 3 months after treatment for trichomoniasis due to high reinfection rates.

Keeping your personal data secure is important to us. We use appropriate technical and organizational measures to ensure security and confidentiality of your information, and only share your information where required to deliver our products and services or where we have a legal basis to do so. All samples are disposed of following analysis.

LetsGetChecked tests are physician-approved and are as accurate as tests you would take in a healthcare facility. All tests are analyzed in labs which are CLIA certified and CAP-accredited in the US.

Our laboratories undergo a frequent quality control check to ensure the highest standard of testing. The equipment and analyzers used in our partner labs are all designed for the specific function of capillary testing. All kits come with clear instructions that will guide you on how to take your sample. Failing to follow these instructions may increase the possibility of inaccurate results.

Candida and bacterial vaginosis are not considered to be STDs. Trichomoniasis is an STD but it is the most common curable STD.

This test looks for the following types of candida:

  • Candida species group (C. albicans, C. tropicalis, C. parapsilosis, C. dubliniensis).
You will receive an overall positive result for candida if one of these species are identified. If one of the candida species is detected, treatment will not be provided in the absence of vaginal symptoms.
  • Candida glabrata
Candida glabrata can be treatment resistant to some medications. Customers with a detected candida glabrata test result will be advised to follow up with their healthcare provider for suitable treatment options.

This test looks for three bacteria that are associated with BV:

  • Lactobacillus
  • Atopobium vaginae
  • Gardnerella vaginalis

If any of these bacteria are detected, you will receive a positive test result but the specific bacteria identified will not be provided. Treatment will not be provided in the absence of vaginal symptoms if any of these bacteria are detected.

Testing is the only way to be sure what is causing your vaginitis symptoms. A recent study found that while most healthcare providers diagnosed bacterial vaginosis (BV) from symptoms alone but 63% of the time it was a misdiagnosis. This leads to ineffective treatment and more frequent trips to the doctor. 74% of women have used at-home remedies which may or may not be effective without a diagnosis. Some home remedies can interfere with the delicate PH balance of your vagina and lead to more frequent infections.

With a laboratory test, you can be sure your diagnosis is backed by science and have peace of mind that your treatment is right for your diagnosis.

Without symptoms, BV and candida vaginitis don't need to be treated, but it's very important to treat trichomoniasis whether or not you have symptoms. In fact, 70% of people with trichomoniasis don't experience symptoms and the infection can remain for years untreated and increase your risk of contracting other STDs.
