  • Hemoglobin A1c

Hemoglobin A1c is a protein found on the surface of red blood cells, it sits alongside sugar molecules during the lifespan of red blood cells, generally 3 months. The higher the level of glucose in the blood, the higher the level of hemoglobin A1c, which is indicative of type 1 and 2 diabetes.

  • % of Hemoglobin A1c

The % of Hemoglobin A1c refers to the amount of glycated hemoglobin in the blood. Glycated hemoglobin is red blood cells that have glucose attached to them. An A1c between 5.7-6.4% signals prediabetes. Type 2 diabetes is diagnosed when A1c is over 6.5%

The Diabetes Test shows what a person's average blood glucose level was for 2-3 months before taking the test.

Symptoms of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes may include:

  • Urinating more than usual over a prolonged period of time
  • Persistent thirst
  • Feeling hungry even though you are eating a recommended calorie intake each day
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Dry eyes and/or blurred vision
  • Dry mouth and/or tongue
  • Itchy skin
  • Unexpected weight loss (Type 1 Diabetes)
  • Pain or numbness in the hands (Type 2 Diabetes)

The diabetes Test can diagnose pre-diabetes or determine how well a person's diabetes is being controlled following diagnosis.

You should take the test if:

  • you have diabetes type 1 or type 2
  • you have a family history of diabetes
  • you are presenting with symptoms of diabetes type 1 or type 2

The test must be taken fasted, before 9 a.m and returned on the same day.
